Clean Food, Is It?

Choosing a clean food diet is a personal choice.  It is a choice that I made to help with my digestive issues, and I’m 100% sure that it has helped me stop the Prilosec.

The Z Man and I are not 100% clean food people, we are probably more around the 75% range.  But it is a conscious effort for us because we want to know what we are putting in our bodies.  Still there are times we backslide a bit.  We are human.  But honestly when we do eat something out of the norm for us, more often than not we immediately regret it and wish we hadn’t.

Sometimes even the healthy choices can be deceiving.  For example during the busy summer months when I was working 6 days a week I would sometimes swing by the grocery store for a bag salad to have for my lunch.

  1. An entire bag salad complete with croutons, dressings, fruit, nuts (you get the idea) is $3.00 whereas a salad from a restaurant would run around $7.00
  2. Choosing a salad for lunch IS a healthier choice than restaurant food and most certainly healthier than any drive thru food.
  3. A bag salad is quick and easy, just dump in a bowl and eat which is very convenient.

Take a look at these pictures of what actually comes in a bag (caesar) salad.

Take another look at the ingredient list for this bag salad in the second picture.  YIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Granted that the unwanted ingredients are mostly in the dressing and croutons, but even the cheese has unwanted, unclean ingredients.

That is why I make my own dressing.

homemade-dressing-1

A simple but great basic salad dressing is:

  • 1 tsp dijon mustard
  • 1/3 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • 1 tsp. honey
  • salt and pepper to taste

Combine all the ingredients in a jar and shake to blend.  Done!

Then you don’t have all those unnecessary and unwanted ingredients in your salad, and you are eating clean.

The basics of a clean food diet for us is

  • Five or less ingredients on the label.
  • No unpronounceable ingredients.  If I can’t say it and don’t know what it is then I don’t want to eat it.
  • Natural sugars such as raw honey and pure maple syrup.
  • Cook real food – think of it as what your grandmother or great grandmother cooked and put on the table.
  • Cook your own food so you know what’s in it even if you have to do weekly or bi weekly meal prepping.
  • Read ingredient labels, read all ingredient labels even on the simple items.  Trust me, you’ll be surprised!
  • No meals received through a drive through window.

Like I said earlier, eating clean is a personal choice and one I’m glad I’ve made for me and the Z Man.

And if you decide to try it, then I hope these few tips will help you get started.  Just remember, it’s not about being perfect it’s just about being comfortable with your choices.

Till next time,

Lori

Frugal Five And One Frugal Fail

Well, not every day is a frugal day and yesterday was not a frugal day for me and I’m not happy about it!  I succumbed to temptation and ordered delivery!  I had been craving a piece of pizza for days and I fell into that craving face first!

This bothers me for multiple reasons.

  1. I spent $16 on delivery!!!
  2. It tasted like crap and in no way was it good for my body.
  3. I spent $16 on delivery!!!

But, one must get over it and learn from her mistake and move on.

Friday’s  Tuesday’s Frugal Five:

  1. I’ve started sorting through items I have around the house that I no longer want or need.  I really want to declutter and get rid of all the unnecessary items we have.  I’m going to try my hand at selling on the local Facebook page and craigs list.  Junk out, money in 🙂
  2. My parents came to visit Sunday for dinner.  We had a lovely grass fed beef pot roast that I had bartered for, roasted potatoes and carrots, deviled eggs and a huge pan of cornbread.  The company was lovely, the meal was healthy and delicious and I fed 4 people for well under $10  This is why I really struggle with my frugal fail that I mentioned above.   (must… move… on…)
  3. Our lovely daughter-in-law came to visit (from Georgia) this weekend and she helped me cook the lovely Sunday dinner.  We enjoyed each other’s company without having to make plans, make reservations or go shopping.  She even went with the Z Man to deliver a load of wood that he had sold and we had a great time visiting!
  4. Saturday the Z Man and I had a date night… we rented a movie, had a bottle of wine and ate leftover meatloaf at home.  It was the best date night!  I’m not going to lie, sometimes I do think I’m a bit odd because I’d rather stay at home with my husband and just do us instead of going out and being around a bunch of people we don’t know eating mediocre food (at best) and paying too much for it.  We are homebodies, it’s what we like and it works for us.
  5. I swept all my leftover money from the cash envelopes into savings last week and I’ll continue that process every week, even if it’s only a small amount.  Pennies make dollars Y’all!  Keep on keeping on with the frugalness and be gratefull that spending $16.00 for stupid delivery does in fact bother the crap out of me.    😉  Ok, I’ll not mention it again.

Tell me what frugal fun or frugal fail have you had.

Till next time,

Lori

Friday’s Frugal Five

I started my bullet journaling this week.  This is such a genius idea and I’m so excited about it.  I’ve been journaling for years, but never thought about journaling this way.

Bullet journaling is basically just adding a table of contents to your journal by leaving the first couple of full page spreads empty and creating the table of contents as you go.  It makes referencing so easy.

I got the idea this past weekend from a blog video by Eddie Wadsworth who has the beautiful blog Life in Grace.  She is very personable and she gives great detail on bullet journaling in the video.  You should check it out, she really is lovely.

My grocery pic this week:

Fridays Frugal Five:

  1. Made a return which netted me $37.06
  2. Picked up a few grocery items, keeping my side blinders on and sticking to my list I spent $36.50 on fresh fruits and veggies this week.  I also stocked up on brown rice as you can see.  Right now I’m really enjoying a mushroom omelet and an apple in the mornings for breakfast and it’s working great for me digestively.
  3. We will be picking and canning green beans this weekend.  We planted fall beans and the rabbits decided to leave us a few.  Perhaps we’ll have some rabbit stew this weekend too. 😉
  4. We heat our house with wood and we built the first fire of the season this week.  I love the warmth of wood heat and I love the lower electric bill.
  5. Keeping on keeping on with our frugal routines of saving, tracking our spending, paying bills on time to avoid late fees and breathing fresh air and adding to the pickle jar.

What frugal fun have you had this week?

I hope you have a lovely weekend!

Till next time,

Lori

Let’s Put It In A Pot

I was just sharing with a friend who has a couple of mean roosters how my Grandma more than once put a (mean) chicken in a pot.

I was very young but I remember being chased and pecked at by a mean chicken and before I knew it she had that bird in her arms and a pot was on the stove.

It’s what’s cooking for dinner tonight and I love that I have such fond memories of my Grandma.
